Definition of Supervision
Supervision:
Supervision means, the activity carried out by supervisors to oversee the productivity and progress of employees who report directly to them. In contrast, inspection means close examination to judge quality or detect failures.
Types of supervision:
1. Close or concurrent supervision – It is the close observation what the subordinate does or watching the subordinate while he is working. This may also be termed as policing or regimenting.
2. General or follow-up supervision – It implies looking at the general progress by reviewing the previous reports.
3. Clinical supervision – Supervision of clinical activities or a fellow.
4. Technical supervision
5. Program supervision (Administrative supervision)
Parts of supervision process:
Planning of supervision:
1. Scheduling visits;
2. Reviewing previous reports on progress;
3. Identifying areas where activities require to be stepped up;
4. Identifying problems.
Conduction of supervision:
1. Reviewing records and inventories;
2. Observing status of different activities and the manner of their performance;
3. Interviewing the subordinates;
4. Instructing;
5. Recording the findings

Qualities of a good supervisor:
1. Conducting supervision keeping the work as a central focus.
2. Emphasis on the person performing the work or task not just to find the fault but to train and help.
3. Can build greater ability and maturity in the subordinates so that they perform their role well.
4. Can yield results by improving the performance of the staff supervised.
Function of supervision:
It does not always mean finding faults with the subordinates; it is rather training and helping process. The sole purpose is to build greater ability and maturity in the subordinates so that they perform their role well.
Compare between supervision and monitoring
Supervision
1. It is an important element of direction of subordinates.
2. Objective is to improve the various and maturity in the subordinates so that they perform their role well.
3. Usually done by team leader.
4. Reviews records and inventories observes status of different activities and the manner of their performance.
5. May be done periodically or as a continuous process.
Monitoring
1. It is the part of the implementation phase of a program.
2. Objective is to build greater ability program operations.
3. Usually done by central higher authority
4. Measures performance and identifies deviations.
5. It is a continuous activity throughout.
