Water seal latrine
Definition:
A water sealed latrine is simply a pit latrine that has a water barrier to prevent odors. It has a bowl fixture that has a set amount of water retained in it and operated on the pour to flush system. These types of latrines can be connected to a septic tank system.

Differences between water seal latrine & pit latrine :
Suitable latrine for rural Bangladesh
The most suitable method of excreta disposal in rural areas of Bangladesh is the hand flushed water- seal type of latrines for majority of families. Because it fulfils most of the criterias of an ideal sanitary latrines (given below).
In Bangladesh, the Department of Public Health Engineering under the Ministry of LGRD with the cooperation of UNICEF is providing materials for the construction of these latrines at subsidized rates. It is an ideal latrine for rural communities as it fulfils the basic creteria of an ideal latrine.
Criteria of an ideal sanitary latrine or criteria of a sanitary latrine
1. Prevent the access of flies, insects and rodents to the excreta.
2. Prevent pollution of soil. 3. Prevent contamination of water supplies.
4. Can be casily cleaned and require small quantity of water for flushing.
5. Do not smell so that it can be located within the courtyard or near the house.
6. Can be easily constructed and reasonably cheap.
7. Accord safety, privacy, protection and acceptable to the dwellers.
Sanitation barrier
Definition :
Segregation of excreta by imposing a barrier is called sanitation barrier. This can be done by a sanitary latrine and a disposal pit. It breach the disease cycle in the most effective way, so that the disease agent cannot reach the new host. In short, ‘sanitation barrier’ means – 5 ‘F’s (Fig 17-1):
FOOD: Protection of food
FLUIDS: Protection of water supplies
FLIES: Control of flies
FAECES: Segregation of faeces (most effective)
FINGERS: Personal hygiene
