Prevention of DM & complication
1. Screening for type-2 diabetes –
a. Overweight children with other risk factors for diabetes starting at age 10 and repeating every 2 years.
b. Overweight adults (BMI >25) who have other risk factors.
c. Adults over 45, repeated every 3 years.
2. Body weight and an active lifestyle maintenance.
3. Visit to the health care provider four times a year to evaluate the following-
a. Blood pressure (blood pressure goals should be 130/80 mm/Hg or lower).
b. Glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) checked every 6 months if diabetes is well controlled.
c. Cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked yearly (LDL level should <100 mg/dL).
d. Kidney function assessment – microalbuminuria and serum creatinine.
e. Dental check up every 6 months.
f. Inspection of foot at each visit.
Importance of exercise in diabetes:
It helps with blood sugar control, weight loss, and high blood pressure. People with diabetes who exercise are less likely to experience a heart attack or stroke than those
who do not exercise regularly. Patient needs to change the diet or medication dose if there is change in exercise intensity or duration, to keep blood sugar levels from going too high or low.
Importance of foot care in diabetes:
Diabetes damages blood vessels and nerves and decrease immunity to fight infection. Diabetics may not notice a foot injury until an infection develops. If left untreated, the affected foot may need to be amputated.
To prevent injury to the feet, should have checking and caring the feet every day
