Health for All

Today is our topic of discussion Health for All

Health for All

Definition:

The Word Health Assembly in 1977 decided that the main social goal of the governments and WHO in the coming years should be the “attainment by all the people of the world by the year 2000 AD of a level of health that will permit them to lead a socially and economically productive life”. This goal is known as “Health for All by the year 2000” (HFA).

The driving force behind this concept was that the unacceptably low level of health status of the majority of the world’s population especially the rural poor and the existence of gross disparities in health between the rich and the poor, urban and rural population, both between and within countries.

Principle of HFA:

‘Equity in health’ – All people should have an opportunity to enjoy good health, ensured by an equitable distribution of health resources. Importance of PHC for attainment of HFA: In 1978, the Alma-Ata International Conference on primary health care reaffirmed Health for All as the major social goal of governments, and stated that the best approach to achieve the goal of HFA is by providing primary health care, especially to the vast majority of underserved rural people and urban poor.

It was envisaged that by the year 2000, at least essential health care should be accessible to all individuals and families in an acceptable and affordable way, with their full participation.

The Alma-Ata Conference called on all governments to formulate national policies, strategies and plans of action to launch and sustain primary health care as part of a national health system.

It is left to each country to develop its norms and indicators for providing primary health care according to its own circumstances.
