Today is our topic of discussion Fertility statistics
Fertility statistics
Definition:
This means statistical measurements related with fertility. It includes general fertility rate, age-specific fertility rate, total fertility rate and child-women ratio.
Crude Birth Rate:
Crude birth rate (CBR) is the number of live births per 1,000 populations at a specified area in a specified year. CBR in Bangladesh is 24.68 births/1000 populations (2009).
Number of live births during the year CBR
CBR = ——————————————————- × 1000
Mid-year population
General Fertility Rate (GFR):
It is defined as number of live births per 1,000 women in child bearing age in a year.
Number of live births to women 15-49 in an area during the year
GFR = —————————————————————————————- ×1000
Mid-year population of women aged 15-49 in the same area in same year

Age-specific Fertility Rate (ASFR):
ASFR is defined as the ‘number of live births in a year to one thousand women in any specified age group’. Calculated for 5-year age groups from 15-19 to 45-49.
Number of live births to women of the specified age interval
ASFR = ————————————————————————— ×1000
Number of women of the specified age interval
Total Fertility Rate (TFR):
TFR represents the average number of children a women would have if she were to pass through her reproductive years bearing children at the same rates as the women now in each age group.
It is computed by summing the age-specific fertility rates for all ages. If 5-year age groups are used, the sum of the rates is multiplied by 5. TFR is considered as a refined measure of fertility. It gives the approximate magnitude of ‘completed family size’. TFR in Bangladesh is 2.74 children born / women (2009). Previously, it was 3.1.

Child-Women Ratio (CWR):
Ratio of children 5 years per thousand women of child bearing age, 15-49. This ratio may be used where statistics on registration of births either do not exist or are incomplete.
Number of children less than 5 years
CWR = ———————————————– × 1000
Number of women aged 15-49
Net Reproduction Rate (NRR):
It is defined as the number of daughters a newborn girl will bear during her lifetime assuming fixed age specific fertility and mortality rates. An NRR of 1.0 indicates that a population’s fertility and mortality levels would result in exact replacement of mothers by daughters.
