Definition:

It is the interaction between a doctor/health care provider and a patient, 

Importance of good doctor/health care provider and patient relationship:

  1. It is essential to give maximum psychological satisfaction to his patients.
  2. It is essential for better outcome of patients.
  3. It is also essential for mental peace of the physician also.

 Criteria of good doctor/health care provider and patient relationship

Trust and confidence

The doctor/health care provider must attempt to practice medicine in the best interest of the patient for acquiring trust and confidence of the patients.

Instillation of hope and minimization of fear and doubt –

The doctor/health care provider must reassure the patient that the best possible treatment will be provided and that pain and suffering will be minimized without misleading the patient when symptom or a terminal diagnosis exists. 

Empathy –

Wherein the doctor/health care provider places himself in the patient’s position, it helps the doctor/health care provider understand how the patient feels.

A personal relationship based on concern –

should be afforded to every patient. The patient should be seen as a total human being, rather than a vector of altered physiology and should receive treatment for both illness and disease (see below).

Communication –

It is a difficult task that requires training, experience and skill. By allowing a patient to relate his story and his voice concerns, a health care provider/doctor helps to strengthen the important relationship they share.

Bridging cultural gaps –

Cultures differ in how they view disease causation and treatment. Failure of the doctor to acknowledge the patient’s cultural beliefs will result in poor communication with the patient and limited compliance by the patient.

  3. Truth-telling in serious illness 
  4. Conflict and conflict-solving

Patient Autonomy:

It means ‘the right of patients to make decisions about their medical care without their health care provider trying to influence the decision’. Patient autonomy does allow for health care providers to educate the patient but does not allow the health care provider to make the decision for the patient.

Consent:

Consent means ‘giving permission to do something’. From medical point of view, consent means ‘rendering permission to a physician/health care provider to treat the ailment by any suitable method’.
