Dimensions of health
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely an absence of disease or infirmity, so that each citizen can lead a socially and economically productive life (WHO. 1948) Besides these three (physical, mental & social) major dimensions of health, recently a new has been proposed to add to the original definition, the ‘spiritual well-being
From an Islamic perspective, health is viewed as one of the greatest blessings that Allah has bestowed upon human. So, every effort should be made to be, to promote and to maintain a good health.
Definition:
These are the parameters which have impact on the health of individuals. The four major and other sub-dimensions of health are –
- Physical
- Mental
- Social and
- Spiritual
- Others-Emotional, vocational, cultural, environmental, educational etc.
Physical dimension:
This is concerned with the perfect biological functioning of the human physical systems, maintaining a smooth physiological norm of functionality providing an optimal sense of well-being to the individual.
Mental dimension:
Mental dimension of health involves not only freedom from mental diseases, but also includes a state of balance between the individual and the surrounding world, maintaining a harmonious relationship and fruitful co-existence of the individual and environment
Social dimension:
Social well-being implies harmony and integration within the individual between cach individual and other member of society and between individuals and the world in which they live
Spiritual dimension:
Spiritual dimension plays an important role in fashioning human life both as an individual and as a member of society. It includes human integrity, adherence to ethics and principles, an effort to understand the meaning and purpose of human existence.
Emotional dimension:
Emotional dimension deals with flexibility in adopting and controlling emotions to a situation.
Vocational dimension:
When a particular job is fully adapted to human goals. capacities and limitations, it often plays a role in promoting both physical and mental health.
