Environment:

Environment is defined as ‘all the external factors living and non-living, material and non-material which surrounds man’.
In its modern concept, environment includes not only the air, water and soil, but also the social and
economic conditions with which we live.

Components of environment:

1. Physical – Air, water, soil, housing, climate, geography, heat, light, noise, radiation etc.

2. Biological – Virus, bacteria, animals including man, plants, insects, rodents tc.
3. Socioeconomic or sociocultural Culture, customs, beliefs, income, occupation, religion. education etc.

Environmental Health:

Environmental health addresses all the physical, chemical and biological factors external to a person, and all the related factors impacting behaviours. Ignibulum inte It encompasses the assessment and control of those environmental factors that can potentially affect health.

Types of environment:

a. Internal environment: Organ, Organ system, tissue etc., of the body

b. External environment: Surroundings to which man is exposed

Environmental effects on health:

1. The beneficial environmental effects: Longevity and sustained functionality,

2. Two degrees of adverse environmental effects: Injury with decreased longevity or death.

Approach to check the hazardous effect of environment:

In order to identify and investigate adverse states of health due to environmental effect, a systematic approach of health problem identification and characterization must exist and be implemented. These are –

Pollution

Definition:

It means ‘undesirable change in the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of environmental media and that may harm our life, living condition, industrial progress and cultural assets.

Pollutant:

It is defined as the presence in the environment of one or more substances (contaminants) in such quantities and duration that they are or may tend to be injurious to human, plant or animal life or property or interfere with the comfortable enjoyment of life or property or the conduct of business or other human activities.

Major causes of pollution:

1. Industrialization

2. Urbanization
3. Over-population

Types of environmental pollution:

1. Water pollution

2. Air pollution
3. Soil pollution
4. Noise pollution
